MOTS-c is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the 12SrRNA region of mtDNA and is a member of the larger group of mitochondrial derived peptides (MDPs). MDPs have been shown to play a cytoprotective role by helping to preserve mitochondrial function and cell viability under stressful conditions.
